Description
This girl is gathering firewood for cooking a meal for the family. UH! Her mouth is covered because of her shyness. The young man who wants to marry her is seated to her right and is looking at her with great admiration. A long branch is directly behind her suggestive of her family she is about to leave if she marries 'Peter' ( Christian name ). Many Maasai peoples, now that missionaries have brought the Gospel to Kenya, have begun to give Christian names to their children. Her sticks do more than represent fuel because cow dung can also be fuel. My representation of the sticks in her hand serves as a movement matching the branch of her former family. They are lighter in color because her pregnancy may or may not cause her to be an acceptable daughter-in-law. Observe where the sticks are positioned just over her stomach.
A strong left arm embraces the unborn and she whispers to the fetus: "Gitau Perpetua, you will be my support now as we go to be one in the Peter family, o.k.! The fetus kicks in the womb, so her smile is even greater because of their secret. She is a member of the Ki Ku Yu speaking tribe closely related to the Maasai in the region of Kenya.
