Description
The is a study of contrasting values. On the left, the white value and negative space serve to typify her innocence. Her sultry look is deceiving because she is in fact displeased at her betrothed because her parents are not approving of what he has to give to them as a dowry.
The right side black value introduces her darkened prospect of marraige when she asks her beau: Where You Going? He answers "away", now she must abide by her elder's decision
which proclaims 'he is not wealthy enough' so we will choose another.
She has prematurely placed a silver ring about her neck on a silver chain in anticipation of her wedding. The gold earring symbolizes her untarnished hope for change in the old mores of her clan. Her name Napinisha being interpreted from her native language means - One who faces
much, but overcomes all.
One of 21 paintings exhibited at "Maasai Women: A Chapter Celebrating Diverse Expressions In Realism" exhibition in Baltimore, MD. December 2006.
