Description
This drawing is a study of the fading heritage of the Maasai (Ma) tribe. This portrait was produced after 80 hours of pencil marks using various weight leads. Notice the fly just behind and over the eye. That fly can take it's flight at any moment. So, the Heritage of the MA can be
lost forever if notice isn't taken to help preserve the way of life for these people. Rendering the woman's home-created earrings of leather, wire, glass beads, and ivory should be a special note. Her lips show a dry desolate invitation to the harsh landscape in the Maasai lands, where rain is a precious commodity. Her dark foreboding cheekbone reminds the viewer of the
lean flesh which is getting close to the bone. On a lighter note the gleam in her eye does symbolize hope. The unfinished necklace was by design, because the Maasai story is not finished. This drawing was produced in 1971 while attending MICA It is framed and under glass presently.
This graphite was used as a cover shot for the "FACULTY and STAFF OF MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY ART EXHIBITION AT THE INNER HARBOR IN BALTIMORE MD., IN 1975. At that time,
the artist was a student at Morgan State U.
